Going to the Chapel

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Yesterday I had the opportunity to sit down with a couple, who is getting married this fall.  I asked questions about their struggles and tried to give them some advice as they enter marriage.  One thing that I really believe couples have a hard time understanding about marriage is the “leaving and cleaving” that the Bible talks about.  Here is a blog post from Shawn Love Joy, who explains really well, what this means.

Leaving and cleaving affects my relationship with:

My parents:

  • It means every time I have conflict with my spouse, I don’t run home to mama or pick up the phone and vent about my spouse!
  • It means that even though I honor my parents, I never honor their wishes over my spouses!
  • It means I speak positively of my spouse to my parents and extended family!

My children:

  • It means I always speak positively of their mother (none of this “Well, you know your MOTHER…” stuff).
  • It means I don’t get so caught up keeping my kids happy that I neglect the happiness of my spouse!
  • It means that the kids have their beds, and we have ours. So I make them sleep in theirs!
  • It means I make the kids go to bed at a reasonable time, so that I can spend some time cultivating the closest human relationship God has given me!
  • It means I back my spouse in the discipline of our children (as long as it’s legal!).

My friends:

  • When I get married, my spouse becomes my best friend. Not my best friend from High School or college, and especially not my old best friend of the opposite sex!
  • If there’s any close friend I have that my spouse objects to, they’re no longer my close friend. Period.

My stuff:

  • There’s no longer my car and her car; my bank account and her bank account. Everything my wife has belongs to me! And vice versa!

After this discussion, do you think most husbands and wives REALLY understand the implications of leaving and cleaving?

Awesome Week…

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Let me tell you, in reverse, why this past week was awesome…

  • Right now I am in Lousiville, with my family at the Kentucky State Fair.
  • I stayed up with Donnie to 1:30am talking about church stuff.
  • Last night we stayed with my pastor (Donnie) in his brand new house (it was also their first night).  We all had to sleep on air mattresses.  It was like camping out except indoors!
  • I was able to make it to Crestwood Baptist Church, to hear Donnie preach, in his new church.  Watch out Crestwood, God is about to move like never before there.
  • Yesterday we had 251 people in our morning Worship Experience.  We hope to double that real soon!
  • Saturday night I preached in Stanton, KY and 15 students repented and gave their lives to Jesus.  It never gets old seeing people get saved.
  • Friday I finished a paper for my seminary class (not fun).
  • Thursday I hung out with some incredible pastors down in South Carolina and was able to listen to Perry Noble stretch us and take us to the next level.  I cannot wait until next month to hang with these guys again!
  • Wednesday I stopped in Pikeville, on the way to South Carolina, to eat with an elderly friend of mine and met a guy named Josh Huffman.  The dudes testimony was insane.  I will share it on my blog someday.
  • Tuesday, I ate Chinese food!
  • OK…there was my awesome week!!!

Season of Blessings

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

We are on the verge of entering into another season of blessings here at Crosspoint Church.  God has done some wonderful things thus far, but I’m confident that He’s just getting started.  God is positioning us to make a major impact this fall in Morehead and on the campus of MSU.  I can’t wait to see what He’s going to do next!  As I said this summer, “Obedience precedes blessings.”  If we continue to be obedient to His Word and calling, we’ll continue to see His blessings poured out upon us.  Crosspoint, determine in your hearts to continue to do what God has called us to do…Relentlessly pursue those who are far from Him and help them become followers of Christ.

As for me, please pray that God will give me safety as I travel this week.  I’ll be heading to Anderson, SC to hang out with Perry Noble and 12 other pastors on Wednesday and Thursday.  This will be a monthly event for me over the next six months…It’s going to be awesome!  Also, I am preaching at a community-wide rally in Stanton, KY on Saturday night at 6:00pm at Immanuel Baptist Church.  All of this will be happening while I finish up my seminary class this week and polish up my sermon for Sunday.  Like I said, PLEASE PRAY!

Make sure you invite someone to church this weekend for part III of our “Fearless” series…This week’s message is going to be one of my favorites!

Monday Mind Dump
